The Drought is Over: CUBS WIN!

As most people know by now, the Chicago Cubs have won the World Series. While that news is not Earth-shattering to the majority of the 7 billion plus people on the Third Rock from the Sun, to those of us who have suffered for over a is akin to the arrival of the Messiah.

Let’s take a step back…the last time the Cubs won the World Series was 1908. That was the last year of the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. It was the year that the Model-T Ford came out. It was the first time a long-distance radio message was sent from the Eiffel Tower. Think about all that has transpired in this world since then.

And yet….

During that entire time, the Cubs  made it to the World Series a few times. They made it in 1918, 1932, 1938 (and 1945)…only to lose.

I think that a true vignette sums up what it means…oh, sorry…what it MEANT … to be a Cub fan:
About 20 years ago, in the “friendly confines” of Wrigley Field, the Cubs were about to take to the field for the first game of the season.Out in the bleachers, a Cub fan held up a sign that said: “Wait ’til next year!” Yes, on OPENING day! One did not go to a Cub game to see them WIN…you went because they were the lovable club to whom you were loyal.

And then, something magical happened…the 2015-2016 season began, and they were on fire! It was surreal to follow them this season; often it was necessary to look just one more time to see that you were not imagining things…yes, the Cubs are STILL in first place.

As summer turned to fall and the W’s kept piling up, people began — in hushed tones — to state what seemed like the impossible….the Cubbies are going all the way this year. One series after another, they slogged their way to the World Series…and it all came down to Game Number 7.

Along with many other bleary-eyed fans in Israel, I awoke in the middle of the night to watch…we were ahead…by THREE…but then the Indians (a MOST formidable opponent!) tied the game…It went into the 9th tied…rain delay…really? A rain delay?? The worldwide Cub fan network held its collective breath…would the Cubs stumble?

In the end, the 108 YEAR drought–longest of any major league sport team in the main four sports categories–ended: THE CUBS WIN THE 2016 WORLD SERIES. I never, ever thought I would utter those words in my lifetime!

So, to all of the Indians fans: It was a great and well-fought series. To all my fellow Cubs fans: Mazal Tov and may we revel in this win for a long time. What our parents, grand-parents and great-grandparents could only dream of…we have witnessed in our lives. May we share in many more smachot in the future!

Mazal tov to the 2016 WORLD CHAMPS: THE CHICAGO CUBS!

May we witness the true coming of the Messiah speedily in our days….this week, perhaps?
